ISEA has published a new American National Standard for decontamination showers. Developed to meet the needs of emergency first responders and health care facilities, ANSI/ISEA 113-2008 provides manufacturers, users, and specifiers with a consistent set of design guidance in the form of minimum performance requirements and testing procedures for decontamination showers. In the years following the 9-11 attacks, portable hazmat decontamination shower systems of all types have appeared in the North American marketplace - from homemade plastic and saw horse showers to single user pneumatic and metal framed shower units and multiple line 3- and 4- stage mass casualty shower systems. While most products were well-intentioned, no actual standard in terms of flow rates, water stream, shower head placement, and other pertinent performance characteristics existed prior to the development of this standard. The standard is available from ISEA for $24 a copy. For more information, contact Cristine Fargo, ISEA Manager of Standards Programs. Product Group elections were held before the 2008 Fall Meeting for the Eye and Face Protection, Hearing Protection, Instruments, Protective Apparel and Respiratory Protection Groups. The chairs of Product Groups serve two-year terms, and half the groups elect officers each year. Here are the product group chairs for 2008-2009. Suppliers are now eligible for full voting membership. The Board voted at its November meeting to upgrade the membership status of manufacturers of components and materials, who have previously been non-voting associate members. The change will be phased in over a year, with final implementation in 2009. ISEA's public safety vest standard will enhance safety for emergency responders. The American National Standard for High Visibility Public Safety Vests, ANSI/ISEA 207-2006, establishes design and performance specifications and use criteria for high visibility vests used by law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services.
Personal
protective equipment (PPE) use in the heavy construction industry is on
this rise. But an ISEA survey
shows that hundreds of thousands of workers in dangerous jobs are still
unprotected when they need to be.
