ISEA has petitioned OSHA to ban silica in sandblasting, and update its hearing protection standard

Both petitions were submitted April 28. The silica petition, submitted jointly with the Risk Insurance Management Society (RIMS), asks for an expedited rulemaking to amend regulations and make the use of silica sand in abrasive blasting a prohibited practice. The noise petition asks the agency to change the PEL for occupational noise from 90 dBaA to 85 dBA, and lower the exchange rate (the allowable increase in decibels for each halving of duration of exposure) from 5 to 3.
