ISEA Awards 2019 Daniel K. Shipp Scholarship to Indiana University of Pennsylvania Student

Patrick Delvernois won the 2019 Daniel K. Shipp Scholarship.

Patrick Delvernois from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, has won the 2019 Daniel K. Shipp Scholarship, presented by the ISEA.

Mr. Delvernois is studying at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), with a GPA of 3.85, and has one year remaining in his degree for Safety, Health, and Environmental Applied Sciences at IUP.

Mr. Delvernois served as the secretary and is currently serving as the executive committee member of the ASSP student section for IUP. Within these roles, he was instrumental in the organization of tours at NIOSH research facilities, invited professional speakers to talk about the new Silica and Asbestos standards, established networking opportunities and resume workshops, and arranged Western Pennsylvania ASSP chapter meetings, as well as professional development conferences.

Mr. Delvernois conducted research projects with the IUP Safety, Health, and Environmental Applied Sciences department, and was the lead student researcher on three projects, which dealt with topics such as comparing the NIOSH noise app to noise dosimeters, educating others on the dangers of e-cigarettes, and demonstrating the relationship between reduced muscle activity and meditative music.

Mr. also Delvernois spent time at Cummins as their Health, Safety, and Environmental intern in two different facilities during the summers of 2018 and 2019. During his tenure, Mr. Delvernois conducted 117 workplace ergonomics assessments, recommending solutions to management regarding 30 hazardous workstations, and creating 25 picture-based hazard assessments, among other responsibilities.

“As an independent student who is solely contributing to my own education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, these funds will aide me in gaining more professional experience, enable me to work towards my goals of obtaining my Certified Safety Professional and Certified Industrial Hygienist certifications and being employed by the Department of Energy and/or the Army Corp of Engineers, said Mr. Delvernois. “I am thankful for the generosity of the ISEA and its members, and for setting me on a trajectory of success as I champion worker safety.”

An independent Selection Committee selected Mr. Delvernois from among 15 applicants based on academic performance and other factors.

ISEA instituted the Daniel K. Shipp Scholarship as a legacy program to encourage new generations to enter the Safety and Health profession, and to help defray educational costs to eligible candidates as they pursue a career in the field of environmental and occupational health and safety. The annual scholarship in the amount of $2,500 is open to all college undergraduate students preferably enrolled in majors geared toward a Safety and Health career, (such as, but not limited to, Environmental Science, Fire Protection, Health Physics, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Safety) who are currently registered as full-time students in North America.
