Consensus Participation Opportunity Available
ISEA is now accepting public review comments in response to its proposed revision to ISEA Z308.1, Minimum Requirements for Workplace First Aid Kits. First published in 1978, the proposed update builds upon the initial objective to standardize first aid kits to ensure that items needed to treat the most common types of injuries and sudden illnesses encountered in the workplace are readily accessible and available.
Relying on input from stakeholder groups, large national employers and health and safety experts, the proposed update retains the kit classification (Class A or Class B) as introduced in 2015 and includes several notable updates. Specific among these are updates to first aid supply assortment and quantities, greater specificity regarding tourniquets and bleeding control measures and inclusion of robust discussion to assist the employer in assessing risks, identifying potential hazards and selecting additional first aid supplies relevant to a particular application or work environment.
The public review period will be open June 18 – August 2, 2021.
A copy of the draft standard under consideration is available from ISEA’s webstore. There is a $40 charge for the document. Any comments or questions should be directed, in writing, to standards@safetyequipment.org.
In addition, consensus body members in targeted stakeholder groups are still being accepted. Participants submit comments and vote on approval of the standard; they are the final authority in determining whether a standard is submitted to ANSI for acceptance as an American National Standard. Consensus panel members are needed in the following categories:
- Producer – A manufacturer of the product covered by the standard or components thereof;
- Government – An agency or department that has a regulatory or other interest in the product;
- General Interest – An organization that has a special interest in this standard due to safety, technical or other requirements or an individual expert with knowledge in the area(s) covered by the standard, but who neither produces nor uses products covered by the standard.
