Hand Protection

5 Facts About ANSI/ISEA 105-2024

1

Understanding the Full Spectrum of Hazard Classifications

The ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 standard provides a thorough classification system for hand and arm protection against mechanical and chemical hazards. It includes detailed performance ranges for properties like cut resistance, puncture resistance, abrasion resistance, and chemical permeation resistance, helping users select the right protective gloves and sleeves for different workplace exposures.

Elevating Standards for Enhanced Protection and Markings

This standard introduces new marking requirements to standardize the representation of key protective properties, such as cut, puncture, and abrasion resistance. It also addresses chemical and heat protection by classifying gloves based on chemical permeation, degradation resistance, ignition resistance, burning behavior, heat degradation, and conductive heat resistance. These enhancements ensure products are clearly labeled, allowing users to make informed decisions.

Exploring the Categories of Mechanical Protection

The standard categorizes mechanical protection into specific levels:

  • Cut Resistance: Classified by the weight needed to cut through the material with 20 mm of blade travel.
  •  Puncture Resistance: Assessed by the force required to puncture the material with a sharp probe.
  • Abrasion Resistance: Measured by the number of abrasion cycles the material can withstand before failure.

Voluntary Standard but OSHA Says It’s a Must

While following the ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 standard is voluntary, OSHA require employers to address the use of appropriate hand protection when employees’ hands are exposed to hazards (See sections 1910.138(a); 1910.138(b) of the OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Standards).

Sticking to this standard is a smart way to meet OSHA’s rules and show that you’re serious about keeping everyone safe on the job.

Choosing the Right Protection for Their Specific Needs

Products must display classifications for protective attributes, ensuring that key performance information is visible and understandable. This clear marking system helps users choose the right protection for their specific needs, promoting safety and compliance in the workplace.
