EPR - Why the PPE Industry Needs to Pay Attention
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy that makes manufacturers responsible for the costs of recycling consumer goods.
Think paperboard and plastic packaging of PPE sold at retail. The responsibility falls to the company whose name is on the product. If it doesn’t impact you now, it might later.
Currently, California, Oregon, Colorado, and Maine have EPR laws.
The key elements of EPR laws typically include:
- Recycling and Disposal Responsibility: Ensuring producers are financially responsible for recycling the products they (and their production partners) create. This is usually done through a state-based non-profit that collects fees from companies and distributes funds to local governments the states with ERP programs.
- Reporting and Compliance: Mandating producers to report on their EPR activities, including the amount of products collected, recycled, and disposed of, as well as compliance with relevant regulations and targets.
John Hite, Director, Environmental Policy & Public Affairs, at Clear Strategy, will join us to chat about what PPE manufacturers and providers need to know.
Mr. Hite is a waste policy expert focused on product stewardship and regulatory development. John is a Circular Action Alliance (CAA) team member. CAA provides information and administrative support to those impacted by ERP laws.
