Get the Facts

15-20%

Workplace knee injuries account for 15–20% of lost-time injuries, with an average of 16 days away from work per incident.

3.7x

Construction workers with 11–30 years on the job face a 3.7 times greater risk of developing knee osteoarthritis compared to non-construction workers

22 Days

Employees with job-related knee disorders miss an average of 22 workdays, compared to 3.5 days for non-work-related knee issues.

More Than Pads: The Foundation of Long-Term Mobility

Knee injuries aren’t just painful—they’re among the most common causes of lost work time and long-term disability in physically demanding jobs. From construction sites to manufacturing floors, every kneel, crawl, or impact adds up over time.

While basic padding provides short-term comfort, proper knee protection is designed to prevent cumulative damage, reduce strain, and maintain worker mobility for years to come.

Key Facts:

  • Repetitive kneeling and impact stress are leading causes of chronic knee conditions and musculoskeletal disorders
  • Knee injuries contribute to significant productivity losses and costly workers’ compensation claims each year.

Employers play a vital role in implementing protective gear policies that go beyond minimal compliance to prioritize ergonomic design and preventive care.

ISEA: Driving Innovation and Standards in Knee Protection

ISEA advances knee protection standards to ensure PPE meets real-world workforce demands. Through ANSI/ISEA 510 ISEA will define how knee protection is tested and trusted across industries.

ISEA supports innovation, ergonomic design, and employer education, and produces resources on impact science, workplace implementation, and emerging knee protection technologies.

Practical Solutions to Keep Workers Protected, Supported, and Strong

    • Select knee protection designed for specific job functions—impact, compression, or abrasion resistance.
    • Ensure a snug but flexible fit that stays in place during kneeling, bending, and walking.
    • Avoid overly tight straps or bulky designs that restrict circulation or mobility.
  • Look for standard-conforming (ANSI/ISEA) knee pads with cushioning that redistributes pressure evenly.
  • Prioritize materials that balance comfort, breathability, and durability—such as gel-core or memory foam padding.
  • Encourage workers to adjust and inspect gear daily for wear and tear.
  • Rotate tasks when possible to limit repetitive kneeling.
  • Provide kneeling pads or mats in stationary work areas to reduce cumulative joint stress.
  • Integrate short stretch breaks to maintain flexibility and circulation.
  • Train workers on the importance of proper fitting and consistent use of PPE.
  • Include knee protection guidance in your company’s ergonomic and safety policies.
  • Partner with PPE suppliers to evaluate gear performance in real work conditions.
  • Encourage inspection of knee pads for cracks, flattened foam, or worn straps.
  • Replace PPE on a defined schedule to ensure continued protection and compliance.
