ISEA Awards 2018 Bailey Scholarship to University of Virginia (UVA) Student

Christina Stiebris of Charlottesville, VA, has won the 2018 Lincoln C. Bailey Memorial Scholarship presented by the ISEA.

Ms. Stiebris is currently a junior at the University of Virginia (UVA), pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. She has a 3.45 cumulative GPA and has earned a number of academic distinctions, including Dean’s List honors, being named a U.S. Presidential Scholar as a high school senior, and winning both the Biomedical Design Engineering Challenge and the Jefferson Public Citizen Grant at UVA.

She is the daughter of Imants Stiebris, who is the Vice President of Products and Compliance, with ISEA member company Speakman Company. Headquartered in New Castle, DE. Speakman Company is a leading manufacturer of high-performing plumbing products and emergency equipment. Speakman products are specified in facilities ranging from hospitality and healthcare to manufacturing and education.

Since high school, Ms. Stiebris has applied her engineering skills to creating solutions for children whose medical conditions prevent them from taking part in typical childhood activities. She plans on dedicating her career to working on patient-centered engineering projects with the goal of improving the quality of life of those impacted by debilitating medical conditions.

In addition to her academic achievements, Ms. Stiebris also volunteers with the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad. Now in her third year as an EMT with the squad, she has risen to the position of squad leader with oversight responsibility of the crew on duty. This again demonstrates a commitment to using her skills and education to help others.

“My parents instilled a very strong work ethic in me from a young age, and I plan on dedicating my career to improving the lives of others, using innovation and technology. I’m honored to be the 2018 recipient,” said Ms. Stiebris.

An independent consultant affiliated with George Washington University in Washington D.C. selected Ms. Stiebris from among 19 applicants based on academic performance and other factors.

The Bailey scholarship, established by ISEA in 1998, provides $2,500 each year to a deserving full-time student who is entering his or her junior year or senior year at an accredited college or university in the United States.
