ISEA Innovates, Streamlines Safety Standards Development Process

Online Submission Portal Seeks Ideas for New, Necessary Safety Standards

The International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) has launched a new online portal through which ideas for new occupational safety standards are submitted and evaluated. Through the new Safety Standards Idea Portal, ISEA will identify and review new concepts, emerging trends, and gaps in the occupational safety and health industry.

ISEA, a leader in the development of ANSI-accredited consensus performance standards for safety equipment and technologies, is seeking “safety trailblazers” with fresh insights that could be critical to protecting industries and workers globally.

“Innovation is essential to ensure we’re meeting our commitment to keeping workers safe through the use of PPE and safety equipment.,” said ISEA President & CEO Cam Mackey. “By gathering ideas for new standards, we can identify unmet needs in the market, ultimately helping to transform safety practices in the workplace.”

Submitted proposals, to be evaluated on a rolling basis, will undergo a rigorous evaluation by ISEA volunteer leaders and occupational safety and health experts. Reviewers will work collaboratively with submitters to ensure submissions are clear, compliant, and offer solutions to urgent or emerging safety concerns. Following the meticulous review process, proposals could serve as the foundation for a formal standardization initiative, culminating in an ANSI-accredited safety equipment standard.

To foster an environment of fairness and transparency, ISEA has adopted a double-blind application process for our standards development. Submissions will not include any organizational or personally identifiable information. This ensures that the merit of the standard’s content is prioritized over the identity of its contributors.

“For more than 90 years, ISEA has been at the forefront of developing safety standards to help protect workers,” added Mackey. “This new standards proposal process aims to streamline and modernize standards development, promote inclusivity, and drive continuous improvement in safety protocols. We’re grateful to the outstanding members of the ISEA Standards Planning & Development Committee for their leadership, expertise, and passion!”

This new submission process was developed under the leadership of ISEA’s Standards Planning & Development Committee, chaired by Joann Kline of Kimberly-Clark Professional, with the support of Vice Chair Mackenzie Peters of MSA Safety. The working group that defined the application process was led by Jessica Tredinnick of 3M and included representatives from Carhartt, DuPont Personal Protection, MAGID, Moldex, and Tozuda.

The application guidelines and form can be found at safetyequipment.org.

ISEA will host a webinar on February 28 at Noon ET to introduce potential submitters to the process and walk through the submission guidelines and form. Register here.
